Guansi Junior High School
The school features reading and baseball.
"We value reading," "Look at this map of Taiwan. There are different stops. Students move from one stop to another following the Reading Trail. If they complete the number of books required, they move forward." It is a virtual reading trekking activity.
Maybe one day they will make it real. Read, and visit the place they read about. Mark their footprints and then move on and explore another place which is mentioned in their favourite book.
"This is the sports ground where our baseball team is trained. Our baseball team is often champion of the island."
"It isn't easy to keep the baseball team. There's a lot of fund raising to do in order to support their training and sponsor their competitions."
The school campus is beautiful. It is a pity that the number of students is decreasing with the demographic change.
Guansi Dong Shan County Leader

Mr. Zhou Ting Chun, head of the Guansi County, treated us a Hakka lunch at a western style restaurant with sculptures and mosaics. Very special Hakka dishes such as fried yellow ginger rice, Mui Choi Pork, all with a Guansi flavour.
"I love Dong Shan. The place is beautiful and the natural environment is good for health. There are over 12 elderly over 100 years old here. The county was abandoned and was just a wasteland. We worked together and uncovered a hidden irrigation system, a legacy from long ago. Then we decided to reconstruct the old Dong Shan farmlands. With support from the Government, we converted an abandoned village school to a conservation centre. We work together with university professors who conduct environmental research here and teach courses related to conservation to student groups from Taiwan and overseas. We provide accommodation of a wide range of prices and Hong Kong students are welcome."

Guansi Elementary School - A Reading School in a Hakka County
Principal Tien was newly appointed to this school.
He had a team of senior teachers dedicated to conservation of the natural environment, the preservation of the Hakka heritage, and nurturing students' reading culture and high standard of writing. The teacher researcher culture has enabled the school to sustain and thrive in meeting the challenge of decreasing population and rise of new immigrants
from inter-marriage.

Chien Tan Overseas Youth Activity Center
The Conference was held at the Chien Tan Overseas Youth Activity Center in Taipei, which is opposite to the landmark Grand Hotel. There are two blocks of buildings with classrooms and lecture rooms for seminars and workshops, and a block for hostel services. K and I shared a two-bed room for Taiwan $2700 per evening. Contrary to our expectation, there are no facilities for sports but buffet breakfast is good with Chinese and western food.
There are two dining halls and one restaurant for special guests. On the evening of 11 Nov, we saw heavy presence of police guarding the entrance of the restaurant- 月桂㕔. And two bodyguards with their suits hiding something like guns at the back. We were told that President Ma Yin Jiao came to dinner at this particular restaurant.
This is a simple and modest hostel but accommodating important people and great events.
Meeting Professor Browne
Just to meet him, and tell him face to face how much I love his design. I registered the conference and flew to Taipei. This meeting put me back to the odyssey of finding an effective curriculum model for struggling EFL or ESL Chinese learners across the strait.
